The Nordic countries will assume a leading role in promoting 5G technology. The Prime Ministers agreed that the Nordic countries will be the first and most homogenous area where efficient use is made of 5G technology. Today, on 23 May, the Prime Ministers of the Nordic countries signed a political declaration on the matter to end their two-day summer meeting in Höga Kusten (High Coast), Sweden.

The Prime Ministers learned about the opportunities offered by the future 5G technology from experts and by examining various types of devices where 5G is being used.

In their common declaration the Prime Ministers state that the Nordic countries, known for innovation and digital competence, will take 5G technology forward in all sectors of society. The Prime Ministers commit to creating the conditions in all Nordic countries for successful advancement of digitalisation and 5G connections. They also agreed on a common action plan to be drafted.

“Promoting 5G technology requires cooperation at all levels: global, European and regional. More than ever before, the future technology depends on reliable and fast data transfer and 5G networks”, Prime Minister Sipilä said.

“Finland aims to be among the leaders in adopting 5G technology. We should create a positive environment for advanced digital services. The aim is to build the first commercial 5G networks in the beginning of next year”, he said.
