Minister of Economic Affairs Mika Lintilä and the newly appointed Estonian Minister of Public Administration Janek Mäggi discussed on 7 May 2018 the future of cohesion policy and cross-border cooperation as part of the EU’s multiannual financial framework.

“We received the European Commission’s proposal for a new multiannual financial framework last week. Now we want to make sure that the cohesion policy criteria support the Union’s competitiveness,” Minister Mika Lintilä said in reference to the meeting with his Estonian counterpart.

“It is good news that EU’s cross-border programmes continue, as they clearly bring added value to Europe. They enable Member States and regions to collaborate in tackling common challenges. We also discussed the importance of continuing EU’s maritime cross-border cooperation programmes even in the next funding period,” Minister Lintilä said.

The Minister of Economic Affairs met with the Commissioner as part of his pro-active campaign to influence the EU’s forthcoming financial framework. This spring Minister Lintilä will be meeting with six Commissioners and cohesion ministers from several Member States. Permanent Secretary Jari Gustafsson from the Ministry of Economic Affairs and Employment has also joined the effort and visited four European capitals (Berlin, Paris, Brussels and Haag) to discuss Finland’s views on the EU cohesion policy.

Finland and Estonia held an inter-governmental jubilee meeting on 7 May in Tallinn in commemoration of each country’s 100 years of independence. The Finnish Government visited Tallinn, headed by Prime Minister Juha Sipilä, and met the Estonian Government, which is led by Prime Minister Jüri Ratas. The Permanent Secretaries of Finland and Estonia also convened in a parallel jubilee meeting in Tallinn.
