Exactly one year ago the UN Member States agreed on the new global Sustainable Development Goals and the 2030 Agenda for Sustainable Development. The 2030 Agenda steers the implementation of sustainable development for the next 15 years. On the first anniversary of the Agenda 2030 on Friday 23 September the organisations working on sustainable development issues will be on the move in the streets of Helsinki, Tampere and Turku to share the world’s best news. The idea is to tell about the many good things that have been achieved in sustainable development.

The Agenda 2030 sets shared objectives for all UN Member States for the next 15 years. The Agenda strongly promotes a shift from development policy towards comprehensive sustainable development policy. The aim is to turn the global development into a path where human welfare and human rights, economic prosperity and stable societies can be secured in an environmentally sustainable manner. The aim is also to eradicate extreme poverty in the world.

Finland has been at the forefront in the national implementation of the 2030 Agenda.  In the beginning of 2017 the Finnish Government is to adopt a plan that specifies the key priorities, means and monitoring mechanisms in Finland and for international cooperation.

“The agreement on the 2030 Agenda for Sustainable Development was a major achievement for the international community. For the first time the whole world has shared goals, direction, content and language for sustainable development. Now it is time to move forward and take all this into practice. The implementation of the Agenda requires the same kind of shared commitment and partnerships as we had when adopting the Agenda and goals", says Prime Minister Juha Sipilä, who chairs the Finnish National Commission on Sustainable Development.

Finland's national guideline for sustainable development is the "Society’s Commitment to Sustainability" launched in 2013. It is also an operative tool by which the public sector, companies, corporations and other stakeholders commit to promoting sustainable development in all their work and activities. Finland implements the 2030 Agenda and global goals through Commitment, but also through the Government Programme, EU legislation and international agreements.

To boost regional involvement and dialogue the Prime Minister's Office and Ministry for Foreign Affairs together with towns and cities and sustainable development actors will be organising discussion events on the 2030 Agenda and Finland. The first regional event is to be held in Tampere on 12 October and the second in Oulu on 8 November.
