Strategic communications

The government strategic communications tools and measures are applied when dealing with broad-based issues and important matters of principle that are decided in a government plenary session and when the prime minister considers that such issues require effective and coordinated communications. The strategic communications tools may also used in relation to certain specific and flagship projects, as defined by the prime minister, any other minister in charge, or the Government as a whole.

The Government Communications Department coordinates the ministries' common strategic communications. The strategic tools and measures have been applied in relation to communications on the government structural reform package, coordination group on the social welfare and health care reform, and the Talvivaara mine. As part of the coordination process, representatives of the ministries' communications units meet every Monday to discuss the upcoming week's key news and events.

The guidelines for the government strategic communications are published under the Prime Minister's Office Collection of Regulations (in Finnish only).
