In its plenary session today, on Thursday 25 June, the Government nominated Niilo Jääskinen (Doctor of Laws, Trained on the Bench) as Finland’s candidate for the position of Judge at the Court of Justice of the European Union for a six-year term of office beginning on 7 October 2021.

Jääskinen has served as Finland’s Judge at the Court of Justice since 7 October 2019 and is now being nominated for a new term. He has a long experience of judicial work at the national level, particularly in the Supreme Administrative Court, and a successful career in central government administration. He has served in significant positions of trust on various occasions and his expertise has been widely utilised. He has also produced a large body of academic literature on EU law.

Along with the European Parliament, the Council of the European Union and the European Commission, the Court of Justice is one of the key institutions of the European Union. As the highest court of the European Union, the Court of Justice ensures that the EU treaties and EU legislation are interpreted and applied in accordance with law.

The Court of Justice is composed of 27 Judges, one from each Member State. The Judges are appointed for a term of office of six years, which is renewable. Once Finland has nominated its candidate, the Judge will be appointed by common accord of the governments of the Member States after consultation with a panel responsible for giving opinions on candidates' suitability to perform the duties concerned.
