Minister Tuppurainen to European Parliament plenary session

Minister for European Affairs and Ownership Steering Tytti Tuppurainen will attend the plenary session of the European Parliament in Strasbourg on 17–18 December. The agenda of the session includes the European Council conclusions from 12–13 December, the award of the Sakharov Prize, the election of the next European Ombudsman and the rule of law situation in Malta.

Minister Tuppurainen’s plenary speeches will focus on the EU Pollinators Initiative, animal welfare conditions during transport to third countries, compatibility between the current EU–Mercosur Free Trade Agreement and the Commission’s proposal for a European Green Deal, and the EU strategy to put an end to female genital mutilation around the world.

On Monday 16.12, Minister Tuppurainen will discuss the principle of the rule of law and the rule of law situation in Hungary and Poland with the MEPs of the Committee on Civil Liberties, Justice and Home Affairs.

Minister Tuppurainen will represent the Council of the European Union at the European Parliament, as Finland holds the Presidency of the Council of the EU from July to December 2019. At the plenary session, the Presidency of the Council of the EU takes part in the inter-institutional dialogue with the Members of the European Parliament and the Commissioners and speaks for the Council.

This is the last plenary session of the European Parliament to be held during the Finnish Presidency. Minister Tuppurainen has represented the Council in each of the seven plenary sessions of the current term.
