Press release 352/2018

Finnish Prime Minister Juha Sipilä and Estonian Prime Minister Jüri Ratas will attend the Eesti-Soome cycling event celebrating the centenary of Estonia's independence in Helsinki on 12 August.

Event participants may choose between two different cycling tours, with both of them starting and finishing at Kaivopuisto Park in southern Helsinki. One of the tours is the Eesti cycling tour, at 24.2 kilometres, inspired by Estonia’s Independence Day (24 February). The second one is the Eesti 100 sportive ride, at 100 kilometres. After the cycling tours have ended, there will be centenary celebrations, a soup lunch and musical performances in the finish area.

In connection with the event, Prime Ministers Sipilä and Ratas will discuss Finland’s and Estonia’s bilateral relations and topical EU affairs. Prime Minister Sipilä will tell about the preparations for Finland’s EU Presidency and their progress. The Prime Ministers will also discuss Estonia’s experiences of the Presidency from last year.

Prime Ministers Sipilä and Ratas will fire the starting shot for the Eesti 100 sportive ride at 10.30. The Prime Ministers themselves will cycle the 24.2-kilometre route.

The Eesti-Soome cycling event is arranged by the Prime Minister's Office and Eesti Vabariik 100, in cooperation with Suomen Pyöräily ry and Cycle Club Helsinki ry. Participation in the event is free of charge, and the registration is open until Monday 6 August. Registrations are binding. Participants will be accepted in the order of registration due to a limited number of available spaces.
