The Minister of State for European Affairs Amélie de Montchalin will visit Finland on Thursday 22 August. During the day, she will meet the Finnish Minister for European Affairs Tytti Tuppurainen and Minister for Foreign Affairs Pekka Haavisto. The topics to be discussed at the meetings are the priorities for Finland’s Presidency of the Council of the EU and other current EU policy issues.

Ministers de Montchalin and Tuppurainen are colleagues in the EU General Affairs Council. On the agenda at the Council during this autumn will be the Multiannual Financial Framework of the EU (2021–2027), the rule of law and EU enlargement. The aim for the Finnish Presidency is to bring the negotiations on the financial framework into a conclusion so that an agreement on the framework could be reached at the European Council by the end of the year. During the Presidency Finland will also promote a comprehensive discussion on the rule of law. With respect to enlargement, the EU Member States are to decide in October whether accession negotiations will be opened with North Macedonia and Albania.

In addition, the ministers will discuss the EU’s role as a global leader in climate affairs and ways to strengthen the EU’s competitiveness and the social dimension.
