Minister of Economic Affairs Mika Lintilä met with the Dutch Minister of the Interior Kajsa Ollongren and the Latvian Minister for Economics Arvis Ašeradens on 16 May 2018. They discussed innovation policy, cohesion policy and the EU’s multiannual financial framework.

The three ministers are responsible for cohesion policy in their respective countries.

“The Netherlands, Latvia and Finland all set great store by the EU’s competitiveness. Cohesion policy plays a key role in European competitiveness, and not only because it promotes employment and economic growth, but also because it spurs investments in skills and innovation,” Minister of Economic Affairs Mika Lintilä described his talks with his Minister colleagues.

“Our views were very similar regarding the cohesion policy reform and the streamlining of administration. I also explained Finland’s key goals regarding cohesion policy. One of them is that sparsely population regions in the North will be taken account in the new funding criteria,” Minister Lintilä said.

The Minister of Economic Affairs met with the Commissioner as part of his pro-active campaign to influence the EU’s forthcoming financial framework. This spring Minister Lintilä will be meeting with six Commissioners and cohesion ministers from several Member States. Permanent Secretary Jari Gustafsson from the Ministry of Economic Affairs and Employment has also joined the effort and visited four European capitals (Berlin, Paris, Brussels and Haag) to discuss Finland’s views on the EU cohesion policy.
