Minister for European Affairs Tuppurainen to meet Hungary’s incoming Minister of Justice Judit Varga

Minister for European Affairs Tytti Tuppurainen will meet Judit Varga, Hungary's current State Secretary for EU Relations and incoming Minister of Justice in Helsinki on Monday 8 July. The Ministers will discuss, for example, Finland's Presidency of the Council of the EU and matters relating to the rule of law.

The priorities for Finland’s Presidency are to strengthen common values and the rule of law, make the EU more competitive and socially inclusive, strengthen the EU’s position as a global leader in climate action and ensure the comprehensive security of its citizens. Finland aims at a strong, united and well-functioning EU.

The Finnish Presidency will promote comprehensive discussion on the rule of law. As part of this discussion, EU instruments to prevent shortcomings in the rule of law and to monitor the respect for the rule of law will be strengthened. Minister Tuppurainen will chair the General Affairs Council, which will discuss inter alia the reform of the Council’s rule of law dialogue and the protection of the Union budget against shortcomings in the rule of law. The General Affairs Council is also responsible for Article 7 TEU procedures concerning Hungary and Poland. These procedures are related to compliance with the fundamental values of the Union.
