Prime Minister Sipilä to attend informal European Council in Romania

On Thursday 9 May, Prime Minister Juha Sipilä will attend the informal meeting of the European Council in Sibiu, Romania. At the summit the EU heads of state or government will discuss the future priorities of the Union for the years 2019–2024. These priorities will be included in the EU’s new strategic agenda that is to be adopted at June European Council.

The chair of the meeting, European Council President Donald Tusk has prepared a draft outline for the strategic agenda. The EU priorities for the next five years in the draft are 1) protecting citizens and freedoms 2) developing the EU’s economic base 3) building a greener, fairer and more inclusive future 4) promoting Europe’s interests and values in the world. During the Presidency of the Council of the European Union Finland will be the first country to implement the priorities in the Council’s work.

The Sibiu Declaration that is to be adopted at the meeting will send a message of the EU’s unity and confidence in joint actions.
