Jari Luoto appointed as Director General of Government EU Affairs Department

The Government has appointed Jari Luoto, Master of Social Sciences, as Director General at the Prime Minister’s Office for a fixed term period from 1 September 2022 to 31 August 2027.

At present, he serves the Prime Minister as Under-Secretary of State for European Affairs. His previous positions include Finland’s Ambassador in Switzerland (2014–2017) and Brazil (2010–2014), Ambassador for Baltic Sea Issues (2008–2010) and, at the Prime Minister’s Office, State Secretary for EU Affairs (2006–2008), Under-Secretary of State for EU Affairs (2003–2006) and Special Adviser to the Prime Minister in EU Affairs (1996–2003).

The Department for EU Affairs is responsible for the coordination of the preparation and consideration of matters to be decided by different ministries in the Government Secretariat for EU Affairs, matters concerning amendments to the Treaties of the European Union, coordination of these matters and matters concerning treaties and other international obligations in the European Union, horizontal and institutional matters of key importance for the development of the European Union, and appointments concerning certain institutions of the European Union. 

The Director General is responsible for the management of the department and for the effective performance of its tasks. Director General hold the title of State Secretary for EU Affairs.
